Shawna Caspi

Folk

Toronto, Ontario, Canada
member since: Dec 9, 2005

Introduction

Shawna Caspi grew up in the independent music scene of Ottawa, Ontario. With a fervent loyalty to entertainment weeklies, campus radio, and local bars she was not yet old enough to legally enter, it was inevitable that Shawna would find herself immersed in the industry by the time she no longer needed her fake I.D.

This classically trained folkie and graduate of Canterbury High School’s performing arts program left her hometown to pursue music at York University in Toronto. While studying classical voice and folk guitar and devouring the theories of R. Murray Schafer and Emile Dalcroze, Shawna began writing and performing as part of a trio called The Daily Gnus.

The Daily Gnus were chosen to appear on the Free Times Café Christmas compilation CD in 2003 and were finalists in York University’s battle of the bands, Garageworks, in 2004 before the three members parted ways.

Shawna is currently singing and recording with York University’s award-winning acappella group, WIBI, and continues to write and perform as a solo act. She is also recording with producer Laurence Stevenson from Friends of Fiddler’s Green.

Her rich voice and innovative lyrics compliment her finger-picking guitar style. Inspired by the likes of Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Harmer, and Danny Michel, her carefully crafted songs often deviate from standard compositional form and feature smooth melodies and unusual rhyming schemes. Shawna is a personable performer who loves to tell stories and welcomes audience interaction at all of her live shows.
